PlayAI, formerly known as PlayHT, is a voice AI company building both the underlying speech models and the tooling to turn them into working conversational voice agents. Founded in 2019 by Hammad Syed and Mahmoud Felfel, the company started in text-to-speech and has evolved into a fuller platform spanning high-quality voice generation, voice cloning, and an agent layer for booking meetings, tracking orders, answering questions, and other real tasks.

On the model side, PlayAI emphasizes high-fidelity, zero-shot voice cloning combined with an ultra-low-latency architecture that captures the nuances of human speech — intonation, emotional cadence, and rhythm. A flagship release, PlayDialog, is a multi-turn text-to-speech model that uses a conversation's historical context to control rhythm, intonation, emotion, and pacing, trained on hundreds of millions of conversational examples to produce more natural multi-turn speech. Its voice agents support more than 30 languages and local accents.

For businesses with strict privacy or data-residency needs, PlayAI offers fully on-premise deployment of its speech and voice agents, and it integrates with CRM, scheduling, and order-management systems so agents can take real actions. The company reports working with tens of thousands of customers spanning conversational AI firms, call centers, and media companies.

In November 2024 PlayAI raised a $21M seed round led by Kindred Ventures and co-led by 500 Global, with participation from Race Capital, Y Combinator, Soma Capital, Pioneer Fund, and others; Kindred's Steve Jang joined as a board observer. The Palo Alto company said it would use the capital to advance its generative voice models and voice-agent platform and shorten the time for businesses to build human-quality speech experiences.
