What is Alta?
Alta is an AI-powered personal stylist and shopping app founded by Harvard-trained engineer and investor Jenny Wang. Users photograph their clothes to build a digital closet — Alta cleans them up into studio-quality images — and then receive personalized outfit recommendations based on their existing wardrobe, the weather, their calendar, budget, and occasion. A lifelike personal avatar lets users virtually try on suggested looks, mixing new pieces with clothes they already own.
Bringing 'Clueless' tech to life
Often compared to the fictional closet from Clueless, Alta runs on more than a dozen in-house fashion-specific generative AI models. Beyond daily styling, it generates packing lists for trips, tracks wishlists with price-drop alerts, and offers community style feeds. Alta was named a TIME Best Invention of 2025 and has been featured by Vogue, Fortune, Elle, and Forbes, with a CFDA partnership. The app is currently free to use.
Funding
In June 2025 Alta announced an $11M seed round led by Menlo Ventures, joined by LVMH-family firm Aglaé Ventures, Benchstrength, Phenomenal Ventures, and Anthropic's Anthology Fund, plus angels including DoorDash CEO Tony Xu, Karlie Kloss, and Rent the Runway co-founder Jenny Fleiss.
