Pensive is an AI grading and personalized learning platform built for the realities of large university courses, where instructors and teaching assistants spend enormous amounts of time grading handwritten STEM problem sets and exams. The platform automates that work end to end, ingesting scanned student submissions, evaluating them, and producing final feedback, all within a human-in-the-loop interface that keeps instructors in control of quality.
The defining feature is confidence-scored grading. Pensive assigns a confidence score to each grade it produces, allowing instructors to automatically accept grades that meet a human-level accuracy threshold and focus their manual review only on ambiguous cases. The company reports that this lets graders finish up to 10x faster while maintaining a high agreement rate with instructor-assigned grades, around 95% in its data. By reducing grading time by an average of roughly 65%, Pensive frees faculty to spend more time teaching and gives students faster feedback.
Integration is designed to minimize friction. Pensive works with popular LMS platforms including Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle, so students do not need to adopt another tool and instructors do not have to manage a separate platform. The product has been deployed in real-world courses at more than 100 institutions, and during its closed beta over 1,000 instructors used it to grade more than 3 million questions, with hundreds of thousands of student responses processed.
Pensive exited beta alongside a $6.8 million seed round led by Mayfield, with participation from Reach Capital, Anti Fund, a Sequoia Capital scout fund, an a16z scout fund, Bass Ventures, Vela Partners, and notable angels including Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev and Ramp co-founder Karim Atiyeh. The company was co-founded by CEO Yoonseok Yang, previously of Socra AI, and a technical co-founder, and is using the capital to open its platform to all instructors and expand from grading into personalized learning and feedback. Pensive's research has been documented in an academic paper on AI-powered handwritten STEM grading.
