Grit.io was a US-based developer tools company building AI-assisted automated code migration and refactoring at scale. Its core product helped engineering teams move large codebases between frameworks and language versions, including React 16 to 19, Python 2 to 3, jQuery to vanilla JavaScript and a wide range of API and dependency upgrades that traditionally consumed weeks of engineering time.
The company was founded in 2022 and headquartered in the United States, with a seed round of approximately $7M completed in late 2022. At the core of the product was GritQL, an open-source query language and engine for searching and transforming source code, combined with AI agents that generated and applied migration patterns across large repositories.
On April 10, 2025 Honeycomb announced that it had acquired Grit. In its blog post and PR Newswire release, Honeycomb framed the deal as a strategic investment in pragmatic AI and customer value, with a plan to incorporate Grit's AI agents into Honeycomb's observability platform. The intent is to make it dramatically easier for customers to instrument complex software systems with OpenTelemetry by automating code changes across services.
As part of the acquisition, Honeycomb stated that it would be sunsetting the standalone Grit product while keeping GritQL open source and available to the community. Grit's founder, Morgante Pell, joined the Honeycomb engineering team to lead development of additional AI features combining codebase knowledge with observability data.
NeuronFeed retains Grit.io as a historical profile that pioneered AI-driven large-scale code migrations and now lives on inside Honeycomb's observability roadmap.
