Overview
Chainguard is a software supply chain security company that produces hardened, minimal container images designed to ship with few or no known vulnerabilities. Founded by a team of open-source security veterans including former Google engineer Dan Lorenc, Chainguard helps enterprises eliminate large classes of risk introduced by bloated base images and unpatched open-source dependencies.
Products
Chainguard Images are continuously maintained, minimal images built on the Wolfi undistro, providing reproducible builds, SBOMs, and rapid CVE remediation. The company has extended its catalog with Chainguard AI Images, including CPU- and GPU-enabled containers for frameworks like PyTorch and Conda, optimized for secure AI/ML workload deployment. It also provides VM and library offerings that bring the same hardened, low-CVE approach to broader infrastructure.
Funding and Growth
Chainguard raised a $140M Series C in 2024 led by Redpoint Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and IVP at a valuation above $1.1B, bringing total funding to roughly $256M, and later raised additional growth capital. Its annual recurring revenue grew sharply as enterprises adopted its images to satisfy compliance, FedRAMP, and zero-CVE security mandates.
