What is AIVA?
AIVA (Artificial Intelligence Virtual Artist) is a Luxembourg-based AI music composition platform founded in 2016 by Pierre Barreau, Denis Shtefan, and Vincent Barreau. It generates original music in more than 250 styles — from cinematic orchestral scores to jazz, electronic, and hip hop — in seconds. Users can upload audio or MIDI influences, edit generated tracks note-by-note in a built-in editor, and export MP3, WAV, and MIDI files.
A recognized AI composer
In 2017 AIVA became the first AI to be officially recognized as a composer by SACEM, the French authors' society, an early landmark for generative music. Unlike vocal-song generators, AIVA focuses on instrumental composition and gives producers granular control over structure and instrumentation, making it popular for film, game, and ad scoring.
Pricing and funding
AIVA runs a freemium model: a free tier for non-commercial use, a Standard plan (about EUR 11/month) with limited monetization, and a Pro plan (about EUR 33/month) granting full copyright ownership. The company has raised roughly $2.5M across rounds, including a EUR 1.5M investment from China's NetEase in 2020.
