Character.AI's $150M Series A from a16z funded what is still the largest character-chat audience in the world, and Google's $2.7B licensing deal in 2024 reabsorbed its founders without changing the product roadmap much. Replika owns the established companion-app brand, Tavus brings personalized AI video into the same conversational layer, and a wide tail of NSFW-leaning brands — Candy AI, Lovescape, KupidAI, FantasyGF, CrushOn AI — built profitable subscription businesses without VC. Friend takes the opposite bet with a wearable pendant. Regulation is now the live wire: Character.AI's wrongful-death lawsuit and a wave of state-level AI-companion bills targeting minors are reshaping age-gating across the category.

2023 → 2026Market overview
Key trends 2026
- NSFW pays without raising. Candy AI, Lovescape, and DreamGF run profitable bootstrapped subscriptions while VC-backed peers chase volume.
- Wearables enter the chat. Friend's pendant and competing always-on devices reframe companion AI as ambient rather than app-based.
- State-level minor-safety laws bite. California SB-243 and similar bills force age-verification rebuilds across the entire category.

FAQ
Frequently asked
Is Character.AI still the leader after the Google deal?
Character.AI remains the largest character-chatbot audience by far and continues to operate independently after Google licensed its tech and rehired co-founder Noam Shazeer in August 2024. Product investment slowed during the transition but DAU and session length have stayed near pre-deal levels.
How is ai-companions different from ai-chatbots?
AI-companions covers persona-driven, parasocial, and romantic companion products — Character.AI, Replika, Candy AI, FantasyGF. AI-chatbots is broader and includes utility assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini that don't center on relationship simulation.
Which AI-companion startups serve adult content?
Candy AI, Lovescape, OurDream AI, FantasyGF, KupidAI, DreamGF, Swipey AI, and CrushOn AI all operate uncensored or lightly-moderated NSFW products. Character.AI and Replika enforce content filters and target a non-NSFW audience.
