Tolan is the flagship product of Portola, a San Francisco AI startup behind a deliberately non-romantic AI companion app. Users meet colorful, otherworldly alien characters from 'Planet Portola' that are designed to be supportive friends rather than romantic or sexual partners, positioning Tolan firmly against the wave of AI girlfriend and boyfriend apps.

The company was founded in 2023 by CEO Quinten Farmer, previously co-founder and CEO of fintech Even (acquired by Walmart for $300M in 2022), CTO Evan Goldschmidt, a former Google senior software engineer, and President Ajay Mehta. The Tolan iOS app launched publicly in February 2025.

Each Tolan is a character-first companion with its own personality, voice, and visual identity. The product is built around helping users feel grounded, confident, and emotionally supported, and avoids the parasocial pitfalls of romantic AI chat by keeping the relationship explicitly platonic and playful.

The commercial traction has been outsized for a small team. By mid-2025 Tolan had passed 3 million downloads and more than 100,000 paid subscribers, and reportedly scaled from $4M to $12M ARR in roughly four months. The company employs only around 12 people.

Portola has raised approximately $30M in total funding: a $10M seed led by Lachy Groom with Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Mike Krieger, Amjad Masad, and David Luan participating, followed by a $20M Series A led by Khosla Ventures (Keith Rabois) announced July 2025.
