SiMa.ai is a Silicon Valley semiconductor company building purpose-built silicon and software to run machine learning at the embedded edge with class-leading energy efficiency. The company's central product is its MLSoC — a Machine Learning System-on-Chip that integrates compute, AI acceleration and the supporting subsystems needed to deploy sophisticated AI models in power- and space-constrained environments such as vehicles, robots, drones, cameras and industrial machinery.
Founded in 2018, SiMa.ai set out to solve a specific problem: existing edge solutions forced developers to choose between performance and power efficiency, and few offered the software maturity needed to deploy real-world AI quickly. SiMa.ai's answer pairs its MLSoC hardware with a no-code/low-code software platform (Palette) that lets developers compile, optimize and deploy machine learning pipelines onto the chip. The result is a system designed to deliver high frames-per-second and inference throughput within tight thermal and energy budgets, which is essential for battery-powered and ruggedized edge deployments.
The first-generation MLSoC established SiMa.ai in computer-vision-heavy embedded markets. The company has since pushed into multimodal and generative AI at the edge with its second-generation MLSoC, released in September 2024, which broadens the range of models — including transformer-based and generative workloads — that can run on-device. This positions SiMa.ai to ride the wave of generative AI expanding beyond the cloud into physical, real-world systems.
SiMa.ai has raised approximately $270 million to date. Its 2024 round of $70 million was led by Maverick Capital, with participation from Point72, Jericho and existing investors including Amplify Partners, Dell Technologies Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company and veteran semiconductor executive Lip-Bu Tan. The backing from respected technology and crossover investors reflects confidence in SiMa.ai's combined hardware-plus-software approach to the embedded edge.
With a focus on performance-per-watt, a developer-friendly software stack and a second-generation chip built for multimodal and generative AI, SiMa.ai is among the most credible players bringing advanced AI to the physical edge — from autonomous machines and smart infrastructure to defense and industrial applications.
