What is Cal AI?

Cal AI is a mobile nutrition-tracking app that uses AI image recognition to log calories and macros from a single photo of your plate. Users can also scan barcodes or simply describe a meal in plain language. The app uses the phone's depth sensor to estimate food volume, then breaks meals down into calories, protein, carbs, and fat, syncing with fitness apps to track progress toward weight goals.

A breakout consumer AI story

Founded by teenagers Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, Cal AI launched in May 2024 and became one of the fastest-growing consumer AI apps ever — crossing $1M in sales within four months, more than 5 million downloads within a year, and roughly $30–40M in annualized revenue by 2025, all without raising outside capital. Growth was driven by aggressive influencer marketing and paid social across TikTok and Instagram. In late 2025, MyFitnessPal acquired Cal AI, by then serving over 10 million users.

How it works

Cal AI is free to download with a 3-day trial, then a subscription (about $2.49/month or $29.99/year). Its AI models combine image recognition with nutrition databases, and the app supports custom foods, recipes, and integrations with health platforms, making tracking dramatically faster than manual entry.
