Ayar Labs is a pioneer in silicon photonics for chip-to-chip communication, building optical input/output (I/O) technology that uses light rather than electricity to move data into and out of processors. As AI models and the clusters that run them grow exponentially, the electrical interconnects that link GPUs, CPUs and accelerators have become a fundamental bottleneck — limited in bandwidth, reach and energy efficiency. Ayar Labs replaces those copper-based links with optical interconnects integrated directly at the chip level, unlocking dramatically higher bandwidth at a fraction of the power.

The company's flagship product is the TeraPHY optical engine, which it describes as the industry's first Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) optical interconnect chiplet. Co-packaged alongside a processor, TeraPHY can deliver up to 8 terabits per second of bandwidth, enabling data to travel between chips and across systems over fiber rather than electrical traces. Paired with Ayar's SuperNova light source, the technology provides a complete optical I/O solution that chipmakers and system builders can integrate into their designs to scale AI and high-performance computing beyond the reach and bandwidth limits of conventional electrical I/O.

The strategic importance of optical I/O has attracted an extraordinary roster of investors and partners. Ayar Labs' $155 million Series D, announced in December 2024, was led by Advent Global Opportunities and Light Street Capital and notably included direct investment from the three largest names in AI compute — AMD Ventures, Intel Capital and NVIDIA — alongside new strategic investors 3M Ventures and Autopilot. Existing backers including Applied Ventures, GlobalFoundries, Lockheed Martin Ventures and Playground Global also participated. The round brought Ayar's total funding to roughly $370 million and pushed its valuation above $1 billion.

The participation of AMD, Intel and Nvidia simultaneously is a rare and powerful signal: the entire AI compute industry views optical interconnect as essential infrastructure for the next era of scaling. Ayar Labs is preparing its optical solution for high-volume manufacturing aligned to customer roadmaps, working with foundry partners to bring co-packaged optics into mainstream production.

As the AI buildout pushes against the physical limits of electrical interconnect, Ayar Labs' chip-integrated optical I/O stands out as a foundational technology for connecting the massive, power-hungry clusters that train and serve frontier models.
