Prime Intellect was founded in 2023 by Vincent Weisser (CEO) and Johannes Hagemann with a contrarian thesis: that frontier AI should not be the exclusive province of a handful of well-resourced labs running giant centralized clusters. Instead, the company is building what it calls the 'open superintelligence stack,' a full set of tools to commoditize compute and intelligence through decentralized, internet-scale training and open research.
The platform spans several layers: a marketplace and orchestration layer for aggregating GPU compute from many providers, distributed and decentralized training systems that can coordinate model training across geographically dispersed hardware, reinforcement-learning environments for building agentic models, and the open release of models and research. Prime Intellect drew significant attention with efforts to train large language models collaboratively across the internet, including its INTELLECT model line, demonstrating that decentralized training of frontier-scale models is technically feasible.
Prime Intellect raised a $15 million Series A in February 2025 led by Founders Fund, with participation from Menlo Ventures and a notable roster of angels including Andrej Karpathy, Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue, Tri Dao, Dylan Patel and Emad Mostaque. It followed with a Series B of roughly $50 million in December 2025, bringing total funding to about $70 million across its rounds and accelerating work on its decentralized training stack and open models.
The company occupies a distinctive position in the foundation-model and open-source AI landscape, adjacent to decentralized-compute peers and open-model labs, betting that distributed training plus open research can make advanced AI 'too cheap to meter.' By lowering the cost and concentration of frontier-model development, Prime Intellect aims to broaden who can participate in AI research, an explicitly research-and-infrastructure mission rather than a single applied product.
