Paid is building the commercial backbone of the AI agent economy: infrastructure that lets agent companies bill their customers based on the value or outcomes their agents produce, rather than the legacy seat-based or flat-subscription models that don't fit autonomous software. The company was founded by Manny Medina, who previously co-founded and led the sales-engagement company Outreach, giving it deep credibility in go-to-market and monetization.
The problem Paid targets is structural. When an AI agent can do the work of a person or an entire team, charging per seat undercounts the value delivered, while charging per token or API call ignores it entirely. Outcome- or results-based billing aligns price with the work an agent actually completes, but implementing it requires sophisticated metering, cost and margin tracking, and flexible billing logic. Paid provides this plumbing so agent builders don't have to reinvent it.
Paid raised a roughly €10M pre-seed in early 2025 and then closed an oversubscribed $21.6M seed round led by Lightspeed later in the year, bringing total funding to over $33M. The strong investor interest reflects a thesis that monetization is one of the most important unsolved problems for the entire agent category, and that whoever owns the value-based billing layer could become foundational infrastructure.
The platform sits between an agent company and its customers, instrumenting agent activity to determine what was accomplished, attributing cost and margin, and generating invoices that reflect delivered value. This lets agent vendors experiment with pricing models, prove ROI to buyers, and protect their margins as model and infrastructure costs fluctuate.
As more startups ship production agents in 2025 and 2026, the question of how to charge for them has moved to the foreground. Paid's bet is that value-based pricing will become standard for agents, and that purpose-built billing infrastructure will be essential rather than optional, much as subscription billing tools became standard for SaaS.
