From Gitpod to Ona

Ona began life as Gitpod, the open-source pioneer of cloud development environments used by over a million developers. In September 2025 the company rebranded as Ona and repositioned around a bigger idea: instead of giving humans cloud workspaces, give AI software engineering agents secure, persistent cloud environments where they can work for hours — planning, coding, testing, and opening pull requests end to end.

Platform

The platform has three pillars. Ona Agents are background software engineers that execute tasks and produce review-ready PRs. Ona Environments provide sandboxed, production-like runtimes with the tools, network access, and permissions each task needs — deployable inside a customer's own VPC. Ona Guardrails add runtime security: kernel-level controls, policy enforcement, and full audit trails, which is why regulated enterprises like BNY and Hargreaves Lansdown adopted it. Automations can be triggered from PRs, schedules, or webhooks for work like CVE remediation and API migrations.

OpenAI acquisition

In June 2026 OpenAI announced it would acquire Ona to give its Codex agents persistent, enterprise-grade cloud execution — one of the most significant AI dev-tools acquisitions to date. The company had raised roughly $41M from investors including General Catalyst and GitHub founder Tom Preston-Werner.
