Foundation is a humanoid robotics company developing Phantom, a general-purpose humanoid robot built to do real physical work in human environments. Rather than a research demonstrator, Phantom is positioned for industrial automation, logistics, and other rugged workflows, with additional interest in dual-use and defense logistics. The MK1 version stands about 175 cm tall and weighs roughly 80 kg, with a reported payload around 20 kg and a top speed near 1.7 meters per second, engineered to operate safely alongside human coworkers.

The company was founded in May 2023 by Sankaet Pathak, former CEO of fintech infrastructure company Synapse, along with co-founders Arjun Sethi and Mike LeBlanc. Foundation operates from offices in San Francisco and Munich and takes a deliberately full-stack approach, developing both its humanoid hardware and AI software in-house rather than assembling third-party components. The company argues this integration is necessary to coordinate actuation, perception, and control reliably for general-purpose work.

A key technical differentiator is Foundation's actuator technology. Rather than relying on the harmonic or cycloid drives common in other humanoids, Foundation has developed proprietary back-drivable actuators, described as using rolling-contact gearboxes, intended to deliver high torque while remaining compliant. Back-drivability and compliance help with both energy efficiency and safe physical interaction with people, two persistent challenges for humanoids deployed near human workers.

Foundation has moved quickly from concept to hardware, reportedly delivering its first production humanoid in roughly 13 months and targeting shipments of dozens of robots in 2025 with far larger volumes planned thereafter, contingent on execution. After raising seed funding pre-product, the company, sometimes referred to as Foundation Future Industries, has pursued a substantial new round at a multi-billion-dollar valuation target and has secured Pentagon research contracts to evaluate humanoids for demanding field tasks.
