Founded by the people who invented the Transformer

Essential AI was founded in 2023 in San Francisco by Ashish Vaswani and Niki Parmar, two co-authors of the seminal 'Attention Is All You Need' paper that introduced the Transformer architecture. The company raised an $8.3M seed led by Thrive Capital and a $56.5M Series A led by March Capital, with strategic participation from Google, NVIDIA and AMD — bringing total funding to roughly $65M.

Pivot to open science

While it launched with an enterprise 'brain' vision, Essential AI has become a champion of open AI research. Its flagship releases include Essential-Web v1.0, a 24-trillion-token organized web dataset that ranked #1 on Hugging Face, and Rnj-1 (December 2025), base and instruction-tuned open models named in homage to mathematician Ramanujan. The lab also publishes research on training efficiency, including work on the Muon optimizer for pretraining.

Mission

Essential AI positions itself against the privatization of AI breakthroughs, arguing that 'science accelerates when knowledge is shared' — and backs that up by releasing models, datasets and research artifacts openly for the community.
