CrewAI is an open-source framework for orchestrating role-playing autonomous AI agents, plus a managed enterprise platform built on top of it. The project was created by João Moura, who finished the initial build in October 2023 and quietly released it on GitHub before the company officially launched in January 2024. Rob Bailey joined as COO, and the project quickly accumulated tens of thousands of GitHub stars.

The framework lets developers define crews of agents with distinct roles, goals, and tools, then coordinate sequential or hierarchical workflows. It integrates with major LLM providers, supports custom tools, and exposes hooks for human-in-the-loop checkpoints. CrewAI's open-source library is used to execute more than 10 million agents per month and has been adopted by roughly half of the Fortune 500 in some capacity.

In October 2024 CrewAI announced $18 million in total funding, comprising an inception round led by boldstart ventures and a Series A led by Insight Partners, with participation from Blitzscaling Ventures, Craft Ventures, Earl Grey Capital, and angels including Andrew Ng and Dharmesh Shah. Alongside the funding, the company launched CrewAI Enterprise, a managed cloud platform for deploying, monitoring, and iterating on multi-agent systems with governance and observability for regulated organizations.

CrewAI sits in a crowded field that includes LangGraph, AutoGen, Microsoft's Semantic Kernel, and various proprietary agent platforms. Its differentiation rests on developer ergonomics, a large open-source community, and a clean separation between the free framework and the enterprise control plane.
