Cellular Intelligence, which operated as Somite AI (Somite Therapeutics) at the time of its Series A, is a Boston-based TechBio company building foundation models for human stem cells. Its platform, DeltaStem, is trained on cell signaling and cell-state transition data generated by a proprietary capsule technology that the company states produces data roughly 1,000 times more efficiently than existing state-of-the-art methods. The goal is to turn cell differentiation from a trial-and-error process into a computational engineering discipline, producing protocols optimized for purity, functionality and scalability. Lead therapeutic programs include beta cells for type 1 diabetes, articular cartilage for orthopedic applications, satellite cells for muscular diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and hematopoietic cells for blood disorders. The company was co-founded by Dr. Micha Breakstone, whose previous company Chorus.ai was acquired for $575 million, and Dr. Jonathan Rosenfeld, head of the Fundamental AI Group at MIT, alongside scientific co-founders Prof. Olivier Pourquie (Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School), Prof. Allon Klein (Harvard Medical School), Prof. Jay Shendure (University of Washington) and Prof. Cliff Tabin (Harvard Medical School). The company's original somite.ai domain now redirects to cellularintelligence.com.
Funding
The company announced a Series A of more than $47 million on May 13, 2025, led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from SciFi VC, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Fusion Fund, Ajinomoto Group Ventures, Pitango HealthTech, TechAviv and Harpoon Ventures, plus angel investors including Dr. R. Martin Chavez, former Chairman of Recursion, and Fidji Simo. In August 2025 it announced an additional strategic investment from AMD Ventures; the amount was not disclosed.
