Spotify struck a licensing deal with Universal Music Group to let Premium subscribers create AI-generated covers and remixes of songs, with participating artists receiving revenue share from the fan-made content.
The streaming giant will launch the AI tool as a paid add-on exclusively for Premium users, though it did not disclose pricing or availability dates. The partnership follows Spotify's October announcement that it was developing "artist-first AI products" with major labels including UMG, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group.
Spotify emphasized that its approach centers on "upfront agreements, not by asking for forgiveness later" — a reference to AI music startups like Suno and Udio that built tools without explicit licensing deals. The company outlined principles requiring artist consent and fair compensation for AI-generated content based on their work.
"What we're building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part," said Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström. UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge described the deal as creating "additional revenue opportunities" while deepening fan relationships.
Legal backdrop shifts industry approach
The partnership comes as major labels have aggressively pursued legal action against AI music companies operating without licensing agreements. Warner Music Group settled a $500 million lawsuit with Suno in November, while UMG reached its own settlement with Udio around the same time.
Those legal battles have created pressure for AI music platforms to secure proper licensing before launching consumer-facing tools. Spotify's approach of negotiating upfront agreements with rightsholders represents a more cautious strategy compared to the "move fast and break things" mentality of some AI startups.
UMG has not disclosed which of its artists have agreed to participate in the program. The label represents major acts including Taylor Swift, Drake, and Billie Eilish, though artist participation appears to be voluntary under the consent-based framework Spotify outlined.
Spotify plans to expand similar partnerships with other major labels as it builds out its AI music creation suite. The company expects to provide more details on pricing and launch timing in the coming months.
