Sierra raised approximately $1 billion at a $15 billion valuation, according to CEO Bret Taylor's announcement. The conversational AI company crossed $200 million in annual recurring revenue, up from $150 million in February and $100 million in November.
The funding round comes as the AI industry grapples with a fundamental philosophical divide about AI character and purpose. OpenAI employee Roon sparked weekend discussion by contrasting GPT's utility-focused design with Anthropic's Claude, which he described as "the Other" — an AI that users approach as a moral superior rather than a tool.
"GPT doesn't inspire worship in the same way, as it's a being whose soul has been shaped like a tool with its primary faculty being utility," Roon wrote on X. He noted that users take embarrassing queries to GPT because "there is no Other so there is no Judgement."
The observation highlights Anthropic's founding philosophy of building AI systems that can conscientiously object when their understanding of ethics conflicts with user requests. This approach has created what some see as a more human-like interaction model, though critics within Anthropic have raised concerns about cultish implications.
The utility versus character divide
The debate reflects a broader industry split between two AI development philosophies. The "Clippy" approach prioritizes efficiency and compliance, while the "Anton" model emphasizes moral reasoning and pushback capabilities.
Since the discussion began, GPT-5.5 has merged OpenAI's specialized coding models into its main line, while Claude has maintained its unified model approach with adaptive thinking capabilities. Industry observers note that both strategies face constraints from GPU and CPU shortages that limit the number of viable frontier AI labs.
The philosophical divide extends beyond individual preferences to fundamental questions about AI alignment and safety. Some argue that morally-guided AI systems provide better long-term safety, while others prefer transparent utility-focused tools that don't impose value judgments on users.

The debate underscores how AI development has evolved beyond pure capability improvements to questions of character, agency, and the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence systems.
