Resolution, the AI safety lab formerly known as Sequent, secured a $160 million grant from Coefficient Giving to accelerate alignment research and match the pace of frontier AI development.
The grant comprises $108 million in base funding plus $52 million conditional on hiring targets and compute requirements. Resolution plans to use the capital to build "semiautomated alignment theory" and conduct rigorous empirical research at commercial speed.
Closing the safety-capability gap
The funding addresses what Resolution calls an urgent timing problem: AI developers are building potentially dangerous superintelligence systems rapidly while safety research proceeds at academic pace.
"We want to make the race between rigor and danger a fair(er) fight," the company said in its announcement. Resolution argues that frontier AI systems have reached the threshold where they can contribute meaningfully to theoretical alignment progress.
Coefficient Giving completed the entire funding process in six weeks, reflecting the philanthropic sector's growing urgency around AI safety. The foundation may be joined by additional capital from the planned OpenAI Foundation and following Anthropic's expected IPO.
Resolution will use a portion of the base grant for regranting to external alignment researchers and community infrastructure. The lab plans to raise additional funding from multiple sources once it demonstrates progress with its automated alignment approach.
Scaling research operations
The company is hiring across research scientist, research engineer, and operations roles as it builds what it calls "high-communication-bandwidth teams" of alignment researchers.
Resolution offers compensation above nonprofit and academic standards, though below frontier lab equity packages. The lab requires both significant compute resources for AI-assisted reasoning and GPUs for empirical research, but excludes large-scale model training.
The funding represents one of the largest single grants to an AI safety organization, positioning Resolution to compete directly with commercial labs on research velocity while maintaining focus on alignment rather than capability advancement.
