A comprehensive study of OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise reveals how organizations actually deploy AI in the workplace, analyzing usage data from over 1,500 companies and 17 million messages through March 2026.
The research, conducted by OpenAI researchers alongside academics from Columbia and Wharton, provides the first large-scale analysis of enterprise AI adoption patterns using actual usage data rather than surveys.
Enterprise AI Growth Accelerates
ChatGPT Enterprise token production grew sevenfold between June 2025 and March 2026. About half this growth came from existing customers increasing usage, while the remainder reflected new organizational adoption.
Among U.S. public companies, adopters tend to be larger, more valuable firms with higher R&D and sales spending. This suggests early enterprise AI adoption correlates with existing investment in intangible assets and organizational capabilities.
Usage Spans All Job Levels
Within adopting organizations, ChatGPT Enterprise usage spreads across job functions and seniority levels, though intensity varies significantly. Early-career workers send substantially more messages than senior employees.
Marketing and communications staff show higher usage rates than executives. The pattern suggests AI tools are becoming embedded in day-to-day workflows rather than remaining executive-level experiments.
Broad Task Applications
The study identified diverse use cases spanning writing, technical work, communication, and information synthesis. Usage also extends to research, planning, data analysis, legal work, and finance tasks.
This breadth supports the view of generative AI as a general-purpose technology for knowledge work, rather than a specialized tool for specific functions.
Organizational Learning Continues
The researchers note that firms "differ widely in the speed, breadth and purpose of their enterprise AI adoption" and are "still actively learning how to integrate AI into organizational workflows."
The findings highlight that while individual AI adoption is widespread within organizations, translating this into complementary organizational capabilities remains an ongoing challenge for most companies.
The study represents one of the largest empirical analyses of workplace AI deployment to date, offering concrete data on how enterprise AI adoption unfolds in practice.
