OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, a productivity agent that combines its ChatGPT chatbot, Codex coding assistant, and web browsing capabilities into a single desktop application.

The new tool represents the company's biggest step toward creating a "super app" that it has been developing since March. ChatGPT Work is powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 models, whose release was temporarily delayed by the Trump administration.

Unified productivity platform

ChatGPT Work integrates task scheduling, allowing users to assign work from mobile devices that the agent completes remotely. Users can track progress through either a web browser or the redesigned ChatGPT desktop app.

The agent includes computer use capabilities, enabling it to operate across applications and web browsers to move files and complete tasks. A unified plugin directory lets users connect ChatGPT to external apps by typing "@" followed by the app name when writing prompts.

The system can automate routine work through task scheduling. OpenAI suggests the agent could review Slack updates and generate weekly message summaries as one example use case.

"You remain in control of how ChatGPT works with you," the company said. "You decide what it can access, when it should check in, and when it needs your approval before taking action."

Built-in web browser and app generation

The redesigned desktop app includes a built-in browser that can pull information from websites and generate web applications through a feature called Sites. OpenAI says Sites can create "live dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals, and interactive reports."

As part of the launch, OpenAI will discontinue its Atlas web browser. James Sun, who worked on Atlas, said the company targets August 9 for deprecation.

OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Work today and expects to complete deployment within 24 hours. Free users can access the agent through the desktop app on Mac and Windows, while Plus and Pro subscribers can use it through both the web client and desktop application.
