OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an autonomous workplace agent designed to handle complex tasks that can run "for hours if needed" without constant supervision.
The new tool addresses limitations in OpenAI's previous Agent Mode, which stopped after a few minutes. ChatGPT Work can complete entire workflows — from customer research to campaign briefs to marketing assets — while waiting for user approval on important actions.
The system integrates with workplace tools including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and SharePoint through custom plugins. Desktop users can access local files, while a built-in browser handles online resources. An updated Chrome extension enables web tasks without switching browsers.
Scheduled automation and pricing structure
ChatGPT Work includes Scheduled Tasks, which automate repetitive work on schedules or when monitored events occur. These tasks continue running when users are away and can be monitored via mobile.
OpenAI is merging its coding-focused Codex app into ChatGPT Work, though Codex remains available as a separate view. The original ChatGPT desktop app becomes "ChatGPT Classic," relegated to a basic chat function.
Pricing follows Codex's credit system, with subscription plans reaching $100 monthly that include usage limits. OpenAI warns that complex tasks "may use more of your plan's included usage" compared to typical chat requests.
Enterprise and Education subscribers can set spending limits at group or individual levels. The company acknowledges potential "sticker shock" from extended agent use and high token consumption.
The launch coincides with GPT-5.6, a new model offering "stronger performance per dollar." The highest-performance tier costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.
OpenAI is sunsetting its Atlas web browser less than nine months after launch, consolidating browser functionality into the Chrome extension. Users can reference specific third-party tools using the "@" symbol, though access can be restricted through compliance APIs and admin controls.
