OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an autonomous agent that can complete complex, multi-step tasks across applications and workflows for hours without supervision.

The agent is powered by GPT-5.6, OpenAI's latest frontier model that also launched today. GPT-5.6 enhances reasoning capabilities for multi-step tasks and material creation that follows templates and reference files.

ChatGPT Work builds on Codex technology, which already serves 5 million weekly users. While Codex began as a coding tool for developers, over 1 million people now use it for non-development work, demonstrating broader workplace applications.

The agent can gather information across apps to create finished materials including spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and web applications. It breaks complex projects into smaller steps and completes them independently, maintaining context throughout entire workflows.

Enterprise adoption and use cases

Early enterprise testing shows significant productivity gains across industries. Zapier's Head of Enterprise Marketing used ChatGPT Work to build a system reviewing thousands of monthly leads, tracing customer touchpoints across CRM and email tools to generate executive dashboards that revealed seven figures in potential sales.

RingCentral's R&D Efficiency Manager automated monthly launch checks, reviewing release plans and Jira tasks to flag missing steps and unclear ownership. This allowed him to support roughly 50 product managers instead of one.

Virgin Atlantic's Head of Digital Products used the agent to compare passenger experiences with competitors for five-year planning, reducing weeks of analysis to hours. NVIDIA's Go-to-Market Manager automated GTC conference preparation, replacing an Excel workflow that consumed 40% of his pre-event time.

Availability and integration

ChatGPT Work is rolling out today for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans on web and mobile. Plus and Business plans will receive access over the next few days. The desktop app includes Chat, Work, and Codex on all plans, including Free.

The desktop version offers enhanced capabilities, accessing local files and apps while providing a built-in browser for web-based work. The Codex app is merging with the new ChatGPT desktop app, maintaining its coding capabilities while adding new features like inline editing and pull request review.

Scheduled Tasks allow ChatGPT Work to continue projects independently, turning messages from Microsoft Teams and Slack into updated documents and slides even when users are offline.
