OpenAI launched a $230 light-up keyboard designed to pair with its AI coding assistant, Codex, marking the company's official entry into the hardware market.
The Codex Micro, co-designed with specialty keyboard maker Work Louder, targets developers managing fleets of AI coding agents — semi-autonomous bots that write and execute code with minimal human input.
The device features light-up "Agent Keys" that display agent status, customizable Command Keys for frequent Codex actions, and a joystick for launching common workflows. A dial adjusts agent "reasoning" levels, controlling how much computing power an agent uses on tasks.
Instead of managing agents through phone or desktop apps, users can treat the Micro as their "command center for agentic work," according to OpenAI. The device connects and customizes through the ChatGPT desktop app.
OpenAI described the Micro as a limited-run collaboration, suggesting it's more novelty item than mass-market product. The launch appears designed to signal the company's hardware ambitions rather than drive significant revenue.
Hardware strategy takes shape
The keyboard follows Tuesday's Bloomberg report revealing OpenAI's development of a more substantial hardware device — a portable, screenless smart speaker with "mechanical elements that can move on their own."
That device, still in development and subject to change, integrates with ChatGPT but remains mysterious in its final form. The combination of screenless design, portability, and moving parts leaves questions about the product's ultimate functionality.
The hardware push comes as OpenAI faces legal challenges from Apple over alleged hardware trade theft. The timing adds complexity to OpenAI's hardware ambitions, though the company hasn't publicly addressed how the legal battle might affect its product roadmap.
The Codex Micro is available now through OpenAI's online store, with the company positioning it as the first step in a broader hardware strategy.
