Nvidia integrated its Isaac GR00T 1.7 vision-language-action models for humanoid robotics into Hugging Face's LeRobot open source library, the companies said July 6.

The partnership adds Nvidia's Isaac Teleop framework for robotics data collection to LeRobot, with the Cosmos 3 frontier robotics model planned for future integration.

LeRobot already includes an open source physical AI dataset with more than 350,000 real and simulated trajectories and 57 million grasps. The integration connects Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab simulation frameworks with Jetson Thor, Nvidia's AI supercomputer designed for robotics.

The collaboration gives developers a workflow for collecting robot data, training models, evaluating performance and deploying them on open source humanoids like LeRobot's Reachy 2 platform.

"How do we sell chips? We make those chips incredibly useful," said Jan Liphardt, founder of robotics software company OpenMind. "How do we make them incredibly useful? We open source the data, the tooling, the telemetry, and the simulation environments."

Liphardt compared the strategy to Nvidia's automotive AI approach, where the company built an open ecosystem that became the de facto standard running on Nvidia hardware.

Strategic positioning amid competition

The move comes as Nvidia faces pressure from Chinese humanoid robotics vendors and new competition from Qualcomm's Dragonwing IQ10 and Intel's OpenVINO robotics offerings.

"The company is facing some challenges from Chinese vendors due to the rise of humanoid robotics vendors in China," said Lian Jye Su, an analyst at Omdia.

Beyond commercial strategy, Liphardt argued the collaboration addresses concentration risks in physical AI development. Open source tooling allows developers to inspect data and understand machine decision-making processes.

"You don't want a situation where two or three companies have extreme first-mover advantage and, simply by virtue of having moved first, have almost complete ownership and control of many different verticals," he said.

The partnership reinforces Nvidia's commitment to open source software optimized for GPU hardware while expanding accessibility for physical AI developers.
