Mistral AI raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion, the French AI lab announced Tuesday.
The round positions Mistral as one of Europe's most valuable AI companies as it pushes to make sovereign, open-weight AI models competitive with frontier systems from US labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Mistral has been building open-source foundation models since its founding in 2023, releasing models including Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B. The company focuses on European data sovereignty and regulatory compliance while maintaining competitive performance.
New products and partnerships
The funding comes alongside several product launches. Mistral introduced Shieldstral, a 3B parameter multimodal safety classifier that outperforms models seven times its size. The company also launched Mistral OCR 4 with support for 170 languages and enterprise document processing.
Mistral announced partnerships with Mozilla to integrate AI into web browsers and with Cloudera to bring specialized AI to enterprise data platforms. The company is also working on physics AI models for engineering applications.
The lab recently released Robostral Navigate, an 8B model achieving 76.6% accuracy on navigation benchmarks using only RGB camera input, without depth sensors or LiDAR.
European AI infrastructure push
Mistral is building new European inference infrastructure to support in-region AI deployment. The company aims to provide long-term commitments for European organizations requiring data sovereignty and regulatory compliance.
The funding will accelerate development of larger, more capable models while maintaining Mistral's open-weight approach. The company competes with closed-source systems by offering transparency and local deployment options.
Mistral plans to use the capital to expand its research team and scale compute infrastructure across Europe. The company will continue releasing both open-weight models and commercial API services.
