French AI company Mistral AI has found itself at the center of growing demand for non-US AI alternatives following recent regulatory actions that forced Anthropic to pull its models offline.

The Paris-based company has seen its annual recurring revenue surge from $20 million to over $400 million in just one year, according to February disclosures. The firm is reportedly raising $3.5 billion at a $23.15 billion valuation, nearly doubling its current worth.

Unlike OpenAI's consumer-focused approach, Mistral follows what CEO Arthur Mensch calls the "Palantir playbook." The company deploys forward engineers who help governments and corporations customize AI models for specific use cases.

Mistral's chat assistant Vibe, formerly Le Chat, lacks ChatGPT's brand recognition. Even at Station F, Paris' startup campus, founders prefer Claude over Mistral's models, according to recent surveys.

Enterprise focus drives growth

The company generates revenue by deploying models on enterprise customer infrastructure and through Forge, a platform that lets organizations train custom models using proprietary data. This B2B strategy has helped Mistral claim it's on track to surpass $1 billion in ARR this year.

Mensch has positioned himself as a public advocate for decentralized AI, arguing that "everyone gets access to the best AI systems, outside of centralized control exercised by states or corporations."

The company maintains both open-source and proprietary models, differentiating itself from purely closed competitors. However, Mensch acknowledged in a recent LinkedIn post that "we do not yet own the best language models" compared to US frontier labs.

Mistral's rise comes as European governments increasingly seek "sovereign tech" alternatives to reduce dependence on US-controlled AI systems. The company has gained access to high-level policy discussions, including presentations to the French Parliament.

The firm plans to continue heavy research investments to compete with foundational AI rivals while expanding its enterprise deployment capabilities globally.
