Anthropic expanded Claude's voice mode to support its most capable models, moving beyond the basic Haiku version that powered the feature since its launch last year.

Users can now choose between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models for voice conversations. The system automatically selects the last model used in text chat and defaults to its fastest version.

The upgrade enables longer, more complex conversations including communication coaching, client pitch practice, and product research brainstorming, according to the company.

App integrations set Claude apart

Claude's voice mode now connects with Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. Users can ask it to reschedule meetings, draft emails, or create documents through voice commands.

This marks a significant departure from OpenAI's approach. While OpenAI recently updated ChatGPT's conversational style, its voice mode cannot execute tasks across external applications.

The feature supports 10 languages including English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Users must manually specify their preferred language.

Free users get access to the Haiku model with one connected app. Paid subscribers can use all models with full app integration.

The update arrives weeks after OpenAI shipped new conversational models for ChatGPT, intensifying competition in voice-based AI assistants. Anthropic first launched Claude's voice mode in May 2025, initially limited to quick responses through the Haiku model.

The enhanced voice capabilities are available in beta across all platforms, positioning Claude as a productivity-focused alternative to OpenAI's more conversational approach.
