Anthropic is developing Penlight, a Claude tool that records patient conversations and transforms them into live, searchable AI sessions for clinicians.

The product appears as a standalone experience in Claude's sidebar, alongside existing tools like Claude Code and Design. According to code and interface elements reviewed by TestingCatalog, Penlight is designed to enhance clinical interactions through real-time transcription and research capabilities.

Penlight is currently hidden behind an internal feature flag with an unfinished interface. Several labels appear blank due to unavailable localization messages, though the product name is confirmed in the sidebar and page-heading code.

Once activated, Penlight requests microphone access and streams audio to a dedicated Anthropic service. The browser encodes recordings as mono Opus audio at 16 kHz, optimized for speech rather than high-fidelity playback.

Real-time research integration

The service produces live transcripts that identify different speakers. Users can interact with Claude in a parallel chat panel while the recording continues, allowing questions without interrupting the ongoing visit.

Research results are structured around scientific articles, including journal names, authors, publication years, DOI numbers, and PubMed links. This suggests Penlight aims to help users verify clinical questions against medical literature during active conversations.

Every session is categorized as a "visit" with fields for generated notes, though the current interface doesn't display these yet. The design points toward an ambient clinical assistant that could transcribe appointments, answer questions using medical sources, and prepare documentation.

The home screen centers on session management, with sections for recent activity and sessions requiring attention. A persistent control allows users to return to active recordings, indicating Anthropic designed Penlight for managing multiple visits rather than one-off conversations.

Penlight aligns with Anthropic's broader healthcare push. In January, the company expanded Claude for Healthcare, identifying ambient scribing, chart review, and clinical decision-support as key applications. The healthcare product page already demonstrates workflows turning visit recordings into clinical summaries.

Key questions remain about whether Penlight targets individual clinicians, healthcare organizations, or serves as an internal research program. The code reveals no information about EHR integrations, regional availability, compliance requirements, or pricing.

Penlight represents one of the clearest signs that Anthropic is exploring first-party, industry-specific applications within Claude, moving beyond supplying models to ambient-scribing companies toward testing clinical workflows directly.
