Anthropic released Cowork on 12 January 2026, a new agentic capability built into the Claude macOS desktop application that allows non-technical users to automate file-based tasks without writing a single line of code. The feature is available as a research preview to Claude Max subscribers, the company's power-user tier priced between $100 and $200 per month.
The product's origins trace back to an unexpected usage pattern that emerged after Anthropic launched Claude Code in late 2024. That terminal-based tool was designed for software engineers automating programming tasks, but the company observed a growing share of users pressing it into service for entirely non-technical work. Boris Cherny, an engineer at Anthropic, noted publicly that users had been deploying Claude Code for tasks ranging from vacation research and building slide decks to recovering wedding photos from a hard drive. Cowork is Anthropic's formal response to that signal, an attempt to serve the broader population of knowledge workers who want agentic capability without a command-line interface.
The feature runs inside the Claude desktop application on macOS and can, according to the company, open folders, read documents, and produce structured outputs such as expense reports from unorganised receipts. Anthropic says the team built the entire feature in roughly ten days, using Claude Code itself for much of the development work. The research preview designation means the product remains in an early, iterative state, and access is currently restricted to the highest-paying tier of Claude subscribers.
The launch places Anthropic in more direct competition with Microsoft's Copilot, which has spent the past two years embedding AI assistance across the Office suite for enterprise and consumer users alike. Where Copilot is tightly coupled to Microsoft's own applications, Cowork operates at the file-system level, which in principle gives it broader reach across document types and local storage. Whether that architectural difference translates into a meaningful advantage in practice remains to be seen, but it does reflect a distinct product philosophy: agent-first, application-agnostic.
Cowork is currently macOS-only and limited to Claude Max. Anthropic has not announced a timeline for broader availability or a Windows release.
