Amazon will stop accepting new customers for its Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform on July 30, 2026, effectively putting the 21-year-old service on life support.

The company announced the decision on the Mechanical Turk website after "careful consideration", according to Amazon Web Services. Existing customers can continue using the service, but AWS will not introduce new features.

Launched in 2005, Mechanical Turk created a marketplace where workers completed simple tasks for small payments — identifying objects in images, transcribing audio, or solving CAPTCHAs. The platform became central to debates about crowdsourced labor ethics during its peak years.

By 2018, Amazon repositioned the service as a data annotation tool for training neural networks through its SageMaker AI platform. The platform also became known as the "hidden enabler" for companies using human workers to power products marketed as AI — fitting given the original Mechanical Turk was itself a hoax involving a hidden human chess player.

The AI paradox that killed Mechanical Turk

The relationship between Mechanical Turk and AI models grew increasingly complex over time. A 2023 analysis revealed that between 33% and 46% of platform workers were using large language models to complete their assigned tasks.

This created a circular problem: AI models trained on data annotated by humans who were secretly using AI raised questions about data quality and whether human oversight remained necessary.

Reddit users this week described the platform as having died "years ago" due to widespread bot usage and fraud. Workers and researchers had largely abandoned the service, making it increasingly unreliable for legitimate use cases.

The closure marks the end of an era for one of the earliest examples of human-AI collaboration in the modern internet age. Amazon's decision reflects broader shifts in the AI industry, where automated systems have largely replaced the manual data processing that once required human workers.

Amazon has not announced a complete shutdown date, but the company's focus on existing customers suggests Mechanical Turk will gradually fade as contracts expire.
