TL;DR

Midjourney V7 is still the most beautiful AI image generator. Where Ideogram wins on text and Flux wins on photorealism, Midjourney wins on aesthetic consistency — its images just look good without prompt engineering. The web app finally fixed the Discord-only era but workflow polish still trails Adobe Firefly and Photoshop integrations.

What it does

Midjourney is a text-to-image generator accessed via:

  • The official web app (now the primary surface)
  • Discord (still supported, original interface)
  • An API that finally launched in late 2025 for select partners

Core capabilities in V7: text-to-image, image-to-image, in-painting via "Vary Region," outpainting via "Zoom Out," style references (--sref), character consistency (--cref), and personalization that learns from your rated images.

What is great

Aesthetic baseline is unmatched. Type almost any prompt into Midjourney and the result looks like art. Other models need careful prompting; Midjourney has taste baked in.

Style consistency tools are genuinely useful. --sref (style reference) and --cref (character reference) make it the easiest model for building a consistent visual world across many images.

Personalization learns your taste. After you rate a few hundred images during onboarding, the model biases toward your preferences. The longer you use it the better it gets.

V7 finally has real text rendering. Previously Midjourney was hopeless at text in images. V7 is competitive — not at Ideogram's level, but no longer a deal-breaker.

What is not

The product feels stuck in 2023. Compared to ChatGPT Image, Adobe Firefly, or Photoshop's Generative Fill, Midjourney's editing workflow is primitive. There is no proper layered editing or selection.

Discord legacy still bleeds through. Even the new web app is built around prompts-as-messages. Power users on Photoshop or Figma will find it limiting.

API access is gated and expensive. The official API exists but is partner-only and pricier than running through unofficial wrappers. Programmatic use is awkward.

Subscription, no pay-as-you-go. $10/month minimum even if you only make a few images.

Pricing

Plan Price What you get
Basic $10/mo ~200 generations/month, no relax mode
Standard $30/mo ~900 fast hours, unlimited relax mode
Pro $60/mo Higher fast usage, stealth mode
Mega $120/mo Largest quotas, max parallel jobs

Verdict

Midjourney remains the right tool when you want beautiful images and do not care about deep editing. For brand assets, mood boards, concept art, and social content it is still the best. For commercial production workflows where editing, layers, and integrations matter, Adobe Firefly inside Photoshop has overtaken it.

Who it is for

Best for: Creators, art directors, and indie designers who want gorgeous images fast, brand teams building mood boards, and anyone who values aesthetic quality over editing depth.

Not for: Production teams needing layered editing and integrations, developers needing first-class API access, or budget-tight casual users.

Frequently asked questions

Midjourney V7 vs Flux vs Ideogram?

Midjourney for pure aesthetic appeal. Flux for photorealism and Black Forest Labs control. Ideogram for any prompt requiring readable text.

Is Midjourney safe for commercial use?

Yes on paid plans — you own the images. Standard plan and above include stealth mode for private generation.

Does Midjourney have an API?

Yes but it is partner-gated and not openly available. Most developers use unofficial wrappers, which violate ToS — be careful for commercial use.

Can I edit existing images?

Yes via Vary Region (in-painting), Zoom Out (outpainting), and Pan. But the workflow is not as flexible as Photoshop Generative Fill.

Is V7 better than V6?

Yes — better text rendering, sharper images, more consistent characters with --cref. Some users still prefer V6's style on certain prompts.
