John Schulman is an American AI researcher who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and led its reinforcement learning team, helping create ChatGPT and developing the PPO algorithm widely used in RLHF. He earned his PhD in computer science at UC Berkeley under Pieter Abbeel after studying physics at Caltech. In February 2025 he joined Thinking Machines Lab as co-founder and chief scientist alongside Mira Murati.
